January 09, 2007
ROYAL OAK, Mich — January/February issue of DBusiness, on newsstands Jan. 9, features exclusive interviews with automotive leaders Tom LaSorda, Mark LaNeve, and Jack Roush as part of the magazine's inaugural auto issue. The 112-page magazine also offers a first look inside the previously unreleased Bunkie Knudsen diaries and presents a special report on the global auto market in 2010 and beyond. In addition, DBusiness provides a day-in-the-life account of Detroit Pistons CEO Tom Wilson and reveals billionaire Stephen Ross' next major gift to the University of Michigan.
Chrysler Group President and CEO Tom LaSorda sits down with WJR's Paul W. Smith to discuss Chrysler's frustrating inventory backlog and the roadmap for breaking free from the incentive game. LaSorda also dissects the automaker's global expansion plans and provides a sneak peek at future vehicles.
With Toyota Motor Corp. closing in on General Motors Corp.'s position as the world's leading automaker, GM marketing whiz Mark LaNeve says productivity, quality, and design must be orchestrated perfectly to boost sales and hold off the competition. The former star college linebacker also recounts his first trip to the Great Wall of China in 2004, and discusses how GM will maintain its standing as China's top automaker.
Jack Roush employs 2,400 people, operates more than 50 facilities worldwide, and flies his own planes. In this issue of DBusiness, he delves into his racing obsession and recounts his 2002 death-defying plane crash. Read about Roush's record 14 NASCAR teams -- all fueled through his $450-million automotive empire in Livonia.
As always, the North American International Auto Show is the stage for automakers to reinvent their brands and to excite consumers with out-of-the-box concept cars. DBusiness takes a peek at the hot new offerings of the 2007 Detroit auto show, including models from Audi, Chrysler, Jaguar, and Nissan.
Rounding out its auto coverage, DBusiness examines how automakers are responding to the increased purchasing power of women, and what that means for the future of automotive design. Auto dealers are also finding new ways to appeal to more women customers.
To gain insight on what it takes to run a $600-million basketball enterprise, DBusiness went to work with Detroit Pistons president and CEO Tom Wilson. From early-morning locker room interviews to late-night season-ticketholder Q&A sessions -- and finding time to watch a basketball game somewhere in between -- Wilson shows DBusiness why hard work really does pay off.
For too long, metro Detroit has lacked a comprehensive strategy for the area's revival. DBusiness examines a new plan for metro Detroit, created by the civic group Detroit Renaissance and others, that's intended to stimulate the struggling economy, recapture diminishing intellectual capital, and finally draw new business to the area.
Also in the January/February issue, DBusiness spends a day at the racetrack with Lansing lobbyist Steve Scofes, peeks inside the executive offices of media CEO Ralph Booth and real-estate attorney Paul Huth, examines a new invention from a Michigan entrepreneur that could revolutionize the television industry, and considers why technology companies are investing millions of dollars in bundled services in the state.
Native Detroiter and regular Forbes contributor Jerry Flint makes his debut as DBusiness' first columnist, with some hard-hitting words of advice for Ford Motor Co. When it comes to Ford's "ineptness," Flint pulls no punches, but says he has the cure for the automaker's ills.
